Question
QUESTION: Hello, I have a question for you. I have already worked out a healthy eating plan and also a workout routine. How long, in your opinion, is a safe time frame for me to lose 30-40 pounds of body fat (best case scenario)? I am a male and 25 if that matters. If you need more info from me to better answer my question, let me know. Thank you.

ANSWER: Safe, effective weight loss is about a pound or two a week. It will come off faster at first (maybe 3 or 4 pounds the first couple of weeks) but then you'll stabilize.

Any diet plans or drugs that promise more are gimmicks, and the weight might come off at first, but it won't stay off.

I use voice dictation software to "type" a lot of my answers here on AllExperts, so I apologize if some of my words are wrong (like "two" instead of "to" or "too") or my capitalization and punctuation isn't perfect. I try to edit any mistakes I notice, but they do sometimes slip by. Thanks for understanding.

QUESTION: First let me say thank you for taking time to answer. I would like to start my weight loss journey by losing 20 pounds of fat by Christmas. Do you think thats realistic? Finally, as part of my goal I am pursueing a more cut and defined upper body. I am currently doing push ups and sit ups, do you think they, along with my weight loss, will be sufficient for a defined upper body? Thanks again!

Answer
20 pounds of fat in 8 weeks? It's possible, but it will be VERY hard. I would shoot for a more realistic goal of 10 to 15 pounds.

Pushups are good for your chest and triceps. I would also add some dumbell weight exercises in there too (biceps curls, presses, lat raises, etc.) You don't need a lot of weight - a couple of 15 pound dumbells should be enough.

I personally don't like situps unless you're already in GOOD shape. Situps place a lot of stress on the hip-flexor muscles when what you want is to work the abdominals. Crunches are better for beginners.

And remember, DEFINITION is more about losing FAT than building muscle. If you build muscle and don't burn fat off, you'll just look bulky.
