Insulin Regulation

Question
QUESTION: I'm 29 and am trying to take off about 20lbs and generally eat better. In the mornings, I've started drinking protein shakes (spirutein/low fat MLO) in almond milk with fruit (bananas/strawberries). Occasionally, I can't find unsweetened almond milk and end up consuming more sugars than I'd like. Is there anything I can add to the shakes that will keep my blood sugar from spiking? I haven't been diagnosed myself, but I have a family history of diabetes and want to do what I can to stay this way. Thanks!

ANSWER: Hello Megan!

Thank you for your nutrition question. I would recommend heading to your local health food store and asking for packets of Stevia powder. It is a herbal sweetener that will not cause spikes in blood sugar and tastes wonderful in protein shakes! For ideas to help you lose weight healthfully check out my website www.planetyorgos.com

Hope this helps!

QUESTION: Thanks George!

I was actually not looking for a sweetener, but for an additive (I've heard flax seed works) that itself stabilizes insulin. The shakes are sweet enough already.

Answer
Dear  Megan,

Ground flaxseeds would be a perfect additon to your shakes because are very high in omega-3 essential fatty acids. It's the omega 3s -- "good" fats -- that researchers are looking at in terms of their possible effects on lowering cholesterol, stabilizing blood sugar, lowering the risk of breast, prostate, and colon cancers, and reducing the inflammation of arthritis, as well as the inflammation that accompanies certain illnesses such as Parkinson's disease and asthma.
