Nutritional Effects Of Heating/Boiling Milk

Question
QUESTION: Hello,

I have heard that heating up milk (milk that is already pasturized that is) causes a loss of some of the nutrients compared to drinking milk cold. Is this true? And if so, exactly what nutrients are lost or changed (the protein, the vitamins?) and how much of a loss occurs?

Thank you!

ANSWER: Amanda-

No dont worry about it, One of the main advancements that led to man kind progressing on the evolutionary scale was the advent of Fire and cooking. Its not worth stressing over youll do more damage then any minimal loss in the heating of milk.

Hope that helps,
Phil

QUESTION: Hi Phil,

Thanks for the response.

Just a quick follow up. I only started thinking about this because I am pregnant (8 mo now) and started getting into hot chocolate now that the seasons have changed. I was just trying to figure how to count my hot chocolate into my daily dietary requirements. For example, if there's only half the calcium remaining after I heat up the milk, then I have to make sure I make up the difference with something else. Most people never think about these things, or at least I never did, until I got pregnant and had to think about how my diet affects my baby.

Thanks again for your help!
Amanda

Answer
Amanda-

Congrats on your pregnancy.

NO I really dont think you have a thing to worry about with heating your milk up to make Hot chocolate. Honestly its heated higher then that in the pasteurization process.

I commend you for thinking of your baby with the food you intake :)
