Weight Lost

Question
Hi, Laura
I'm an 18 year old female struggling with weight lost. I weight around 230-250 I haven't checked in a while. I have a lot of issues with me. Sometimes I have this urge to want to exercise. Then there are days where I'm just super lazy and I sit in the house eating all day. I used to be so motivated when I was going to the gym but then I got hit with family issues and I stopped working out at the gym. I'm so scared to exercise in front of people, I don't know why I guess its because I don't want people to think bad of me or judge me or possibly even make fun of me. I want this so bad , I really want to lose weight. I lost 50 pounds before but I just been so lazy the past month. My sisters been putting me down, My mom, Just about everybody and I believe what there saying. "I'll never lose weight" or "Go run around the block and lose some weight". I heard it everyday so why not believe. I'm tired of making excuse for not going out and exercise. What advice can you give me? What kind of exercise can I do without going to the gym that can be as effective? I kind of like to run but It hurts at the same time like after walking or running around my shin area starts to get sore. When I run I can only seem to last for about 2-5 minutes before I pick up again and it hurts when I breath in after running.

Answer
Crystal?you've touched on a couple of key points that many people face. Yes, some days you're going to feel like working out, and others you're going to feel like being lazy. We all go through it. On the one hand it's good to push yourself to exercise and "just do it." On the other hand, you need to listen to your body, and if you feel run down, take it easy that day. The best advice I can give you here is to make a workout schedule and try to stick to it. Start out by just walking every day (or every other day) for 20 or 30 minutes. Gradually increase your time until you're walking an hour a day.

I talk to a lot of people who have a fear of working out in front of other people at a gym. I personally prefer working out at home in private as well?however?you will find that MOST people who work out in a gym understand what you're going through. A lot of them went through it themselves. I would be very surprised if you ran into someone at the gym who would actually make fun of you. If so, that's THEIR problem - not yours. Most people I've met in gyms are very supportive. Try to even find a workout buddy.

However?there are a ton of exercises you can do at home instead of going to the gym. Check my web site for a list. If you can afford a couple of dumbells (start light - a pair of 5 pounders shouldn't cost you more than $15 or so) you can get a great workout.

Running?if you're not in shape, don't start running. Start with WALKING. Then after a month slowly add a little bit of jogging in there (walk for 15 min, then jog for 5, then walk for 15). Slowly increase your jogging. You have to work the body slowly into shape.

Most importantly?KEEP A JOURNAL. Track your progress. Note what you EAT and when you workout.
