Question
my 10yr old son is 4ft 4inchs he weighs 8 stones and is very big for his age, he cannot stop eating, it is out of hunger at most times and out of boredom at other times, he says i am horrible when i do not allow him to eat ceratin foods for his own good, i do not want him to develop an eating disorder as i have one, but he gets bullied at school for his weight and is always asking to take the p.e day off, he is very insecure and i have tried everything to get him to do exercise but all he wants to do is swimming.

Answer
Dear Charlene, Your son has learned some bad eating habits, one of them is eating when he is bored or not hungry. Certain foods can also cause hunger like refined carbohydrates. Foods like bagels, donuts, excess fruit juice, excess milk, sugar foods, mac and cheese, crackers, and cookies are some examples of foods that should be avoided. At his young age, you are in charge of what food is bought and what food he should eat. He will complain and get upset at first, but ultimately you are in charge. Tell him the family as a whole is going to start healthy eating and a daily walk. He, being part of the family, will have to abide by the family rules. Turn off the TV and try to limit his TV viewing to 2 hours per day. Swimming is OK, but on the days he doesn't swim, he should be walking for at least 30 minutes. Most meals should contain a protein food like tuna, chicken, egg, pork, higher protein cereal, lean steak, and fish. Dinners should contain vegetables along with protein foods. See the slimkids.com sample menu page for a sample menu, or ask your son's doctor for a written program to follow. Hope that helps, Laura Kraemer,slimkids.com
