Is Coconut Milk Really Healthy?

Question
Hello again George,

I am interested in drinking coconut milk daily to possibly help improve the performance of my kidneys and also maybe boost my immune system. I've heard it's chock full of electrolytes and better for one than Gatorade.

Have seen lots of info. on the web in various links touting coconut milk's health benefits. Several sources claim the medium chain fatty acids actually help one's heart and the milk has been recommended for those with kidney disease by a prominent Philippine physician.

There seem to be several health benefits listed and it's said now that this milk and oil were never harmful and caused unjustified concern after research found it was harmful only if hydrogenated.

I've done my homework on this but just a little suspicious that I can't find anything negative on coconut milk. Guess that's o.k. too. Just wondering if you'd come across any good medical or unbiased information concerning this subject.

Thank you very much.

Mike E.

Answer
Hello Mike!

It is nice to hear from you. I dont really see many negatives with drinking coconut milk. In fact, coconuts are seen by some as a miracle food, helping to protect and cure the body of internal and external ailments. Coconut milk has many uses, most of which build up the immune system and the body's defenses. To take advantage of the health benefits, find coconut milk in the ethnic foods section of a local grocery store.

Coconut milk contains many vitamins, minerals and electrolytes such as potassium, calcium and chloride.

Saturated Fat and Weight Loss
The saturated fat in coconut is made up of short-chain and medium-chain fatty acids that the body quickly turns into energy instead of storing as fat. Therefore, although high in saturated fat, coconut can aid in weight loss.

Lauric Acid
Half of the medium-chain fatty acids in coconut milk are composed of lauric acid, which is anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-microbial and anti-fungal. Coconut milk can help boost the immune system and fight off illness and disease.

Dairy-Free
Coconut milk is a dairy-free alternative to those who are lactose intolerant or allergic to animal milk. This vegan drink is also soy-free, gluten-free and nut-free.

Relief of Ailments
Coconut milk is known to relieve the symptoms of sore throats and ulcers.

Skin Care
Coconut milk is used in skin care products to moisturize the skin and to relieve dry skin and rashes. It can also be used on the hair and in baths.

Protection
Coconut can help reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes, digestive problems, skin cancer and blemishes.
