My genes and weightloss

Question
i want to tone my tummy, and have tried EVERYTHING (Excluding ridiculous pills and accelerators, I don't believe in those for someone my age) I'm 18 and have been trying to rid myself of what my friends call "puppy skin". My genes are not the best for weight. There is a BIG obesity gene in my family and i don't want to be a part of it. So i have made it a goal of mine to get rid of my fat and lower my BMI to a mid-average number and not just barely average. So i've done everything and my brother (who had the dame issue before he was turned immobile for a year) told me to run a marathon...I hate running personally and the thought is grueling which kills my motivation. I'm an active dancer who does strict ballet and other classical styles 20hrs a week, i have a reasonable diet of 1400-1800 calories a day, and want to know if there is anything you can suggest to me to help tone out myself and keep myself on a plan that i can carry on so i don't fall into my family's genetic fat-trap?

Answer
Dear Brittany, You are doing everything you possible can to stay slim, keep it up! The obesity gene found in about 10% of the population is a gene that makes people who eat a lot of carbohydrate foods, store fat more easily. If you change your diet to eat less carbs and more protein, the body will have a harder time at storing fat. As a dancer, you needs carbs for energy, so choose healthy carbs like whole fruits, vegetables, sweet potato, and oatmeal. Stay away from bagels, mac and cheese, pasta (unless it's whole grain),cookies, crackers, and sugar treats. Hope that helps, Laura Kraemer,Slimkids.com
