Olive oil!!

Question
QUESTION: Hello, I do not eat any processed or ready made food.  I buy all organic vegetables and cook my own meals.  Last night my housemates and I made home made pizza.  for the base we used half wholemeal, half white flour. there was no meat on it, just vegetables and some mozzarella and cheddar cheese (which I imagine is the most fattening of ingredients)Everything was cooked with olive oil.  There are four of use and we made 2 quite large square baking trays and had a half each.  I just wanted to know how healthy you thought home made pizza was and if you could gander a guess at how many calories for hald a baking tray? (I imagine 3-4 slices each)? I have looked online and cant seem to find a straight answer.  Thank you.

ANSWER: Dear Maria,
What a great idea, making your own pizza--I bet it was delicious!
There are so many variables in estimating calorie content of a food I don't have in front of me. That's why you can't find it on the internet--it depends on how thick the crust was, how large the slices, how much cheese, etc.
I will tell you how I would estimate it:  a slice of bread has about 70 calories--if you can picture how many slices of bread would fit in the pan of pizza slices you ate yesterday you can count that many slices times 70 (I would guess maybe 6 slices?  that's 420 calories).  And for every ounce of cheese it would be 70-100 calories depending on whether you used low fat or not... maybe 3 ounces of cheese on the part you ate?  That would make the total about 700 calories, which makes sense for 3-4 slices of homemade pizza.
In pizza you are getting all the food groups! Whole grain, vegetables (even from the tomato sauce), dairy from the cheese, etc.  If you aren't particularly trying for a low calorie diet it's a great meal!

QUESTION: Hello I have a follow up question how many calories would a bagel have.  This is a medium sized seeded bagel.  its not organic but from a bakery so freshly made with some light philladelphia cream cheese on it? ive recently really got into them but will have one as dinner accompanied by salad.  Are they really as bad as I imagine? Thank you

ANSWER: Oh, nice to hear from you again!

Bagels range from 200 calories (for a very, very small one) to 400 calories for a large one.
"some" light cream cheese can have between 60 calories and 200, depending on how many tablespoons you use!

Yes, it's a lot of calories!  You can try making 4 slices instead of 2 and you will eat half the calories if you have 2 slices at dinner :)
Also, a source of protein, instead of the cream cheese, would be a LOT healthier for dinner...cheese, cottage cheese, tuna if you eat meat!

QUESTION: Hello,

I have a question for you.  I am greek, so I do use alot of olive oil, mostly in cooking. In a bid to be healthier, I have started making my own salad and dressing for lunch.  The base of the dressing is olive oil, and I add balsamic and wine vinegar some wholegrain mustard and herbs.  I always thought this would be a healthier less fatty version as the ones in supermarkets that claim to be healthy as I add no sugar or salt. I do realise that olive oil does have calories, but surley, it cant be that bad for you, I do count my calories thoughout the day as im trying to stick to 1300-1500 but just count my lunch, salad and dressing included as 250 calories.  Is this really underestimated due to the oil? also, should i stop using as much if there is a possibility it could lead to weight gain? I dont eat mayonnaise or spreads or any other type of oil, I concidered olive to be the healthiest. How bad it olive oil for you really? thank you.

Answer
Dear Maria,

Although Olive Oil is among the healthier oils (because it is monounsaturated and contains no cholesterol, among other reasons) it still provides about 45 calories per teaspoon.
Not "bad for you" it does provide fat as well (about 5 grams per teaspoon)... so if this is all included in your calorie measurements and also you don't use other spreads (or hidden fats like donuts, other baked goods and fried foods) you should be ok.
