Question
Hi Laura
My 17 year old daughter has hyperinsulin and POCS. She has become at least 50 pounds overweight during the last 5 years and seems absolutely addicted to simple carbs- living on bagels, sandwiches and pasta (and chocolate). We have been to the nutritionist for at least six months- but my daughter was NOT READY to follow the program!
I am so worried , especially with her going away to college in the fall. Of course, the only "exercise" is her fingers on the computer keyboard.
Can you give me 2-3 suggestions of breakfasts and lunches that I could prepare with NO BAGELS or BREADS , while ensuring that she gets PROTEIN and complex carbs.
She is recently lactose intolerant, so cheese, milk and
yogurt are NOT on her radar. She will not try TOFU either, I am running out of ideas!!!!!!
Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
Dear Olivia,
I can give you suggestions, but ultimately it's up to your 17 year old daughter to change her own eating habits. She will when she is ready, hopefully it will be soon. it's hard because you can't make her.
Don't buy pasta, bagels, ramen noodles, mac and cheese, white bread, crackers, cookies, or sugar drinks. Limit all fast foods and pizza. Instead buy whole fruits, whole vegetables, no sugar jello, low sugar soy milk or Lactaid milk, hi protein breakfast cereal, eggs, lean meats, chicken, fish, pork, light chunk tuna, low fat cheese (usually tolerated by lactose intolerant people), and whole grain bread. Breakfast should be an egg and whole grain toast, or serving of low sugar oatmeal, or cereal with the lactaid or soy milk. She can have a fruit at breakfast or as mid morning snack. Her lunch should consist of any meat, chicken, fish, or lean beef portion with at least two servings of any type of vegetables. You can cook it any way you want except frying. The Atkins program, South Beach, even the Slimkids program contain menus that are low carb and higher protein. Hopefully the rest of the family will follow the same healthy eating plan that she will be following. Hope that helps, Laura Kraemer,Slimkids.com
