Would like to change my eating habits

Question
Hi, I am 21 years of age, 5'11, and 330lbs.  I have always been chubby but have recently gained alot of weight I have gone from 260lbs-330lbs within 2-3 years. I never ate the way I should but I guess I was more active then I noticed.  Unfortunately, I am becoming unhappy with myself and would like to change.  I am getting married in October and do not want to have this feeling of low self-esteem on my wedding day.

I have tried other diets before, but I am so hard on myself, as soon as I cheat I beat myself up and end up quitting.  I do not want to starve myself and have unhealthy eating habits because I want to shed a few pounds. I want to learn how to lose it the correct way and have a change of lifestyle for myself.  Aside from eating right, I wanted to know if taking a long walk after work at nights is a good way to being excercising as I do not have the money to go to the gym at this time.

In conclusion, I would like to know an example of how many calories I should eat per day based on my height and weight as well as how many servings of fruit and vegetables I should eat everyday.

If you need an example of what I eat now here it is:
Breakfast
-bagel w/ cream cheese and a glas of OJ
Lunch
- usually a lunchmeat and cheese sandwhich with some chips, pickle and a diet soda
Snack
- today I had 3 choc. cookies after lunch w/ glass of milk
Dinner
-usually some type of meat (ground meat, steak) with mashed potatoes and a vegetable

After dinner if I am hungry later in the evening I may have a bowl of cereal and usually may have another sweet -snack.

I may also have take out on the weekends or on nights I go to school instead of cooking so that is about 2 times per week.

Hope you can help :o)
Thank you!

Answer
Megan,
It is good to see that you are looking for a healthy way to change your life, and getting married is great motivation (Congrats by the way!)

Here are a few general tips I can give you-
1.You want to be at about 1800 calories per day to lose weight.

2.Try eating a fruit or veggie every time you eat something.

3.Walking is a great way to get started exercising.

If you are looking for more structure and support, I do have a weight loss program, which I offer on my website. It covers what to eat, how to exercise and even gives exercises to lower your stress level. I don't want to sound like a sales person, but it really is designed with someone like you in mind- someone who has tried diets and had diets fail her. Instead of starting with a radical change in lifestyle it slowly works you into healthier habits over a 6 month period.

If you want to do it yourself, you can try keeping track of your food on a website like nutritiondata.com- which keeps track of your nutritional and caloric needs.

Hope this helps,
