Brewers Yeast

Question
Dear Expert,
Can we take active brewers yeast internally for nutritional and medicinal uses? What about the inactive (deactivated or pasteurized) brewers yeast? Does this deactivation or pasteurization destroy vitamin B complex or other nutritional benefits? At what temperature and for how long is the pasteurization carried out?
Many thanks and best regards.

Answer
Amany,
Brewers Yeast is an excellent source of B12, which is generally only present in meat, so it is a very popular supplement for vegetarians. The other nutritional benefits of brewers yeast depend on the medium in which it is grown, it will have a different nutritional profile.

May help: Diabetes, hypoglycemia, high cholesterol, eczema, nervousness, fatigue, and constipation.

Special instructions: Take on an empty stomach unless indigestion occurs; then take with food.

Cautions and possible side effects: If you have diabetes or hypoglycemia, consult your doctor before taking. Do not take if you have candidiasis, gout, or high blood levels of uric acid. Use with caution if you have a known allergy to molds. Rarely, may cause occasional flatulence or digestive upset.

Pasteurization is a tricky subject- some people believe that it is no big deal- others only wish to eat live or raw foods. I would not eat live yeast if I had a candida infection, but otherwise it would not matter either way.

Hope this helps,
Lela Simon
