Supplement Overload

Question
Hi Lela

I have high LDL bad cholesterol.

To help lower that figure and my total cholesterol I have been eating ground flaxseed on my cereal and baked goods. In addition I take Centrum Cardio which has phytosterols which reduce cholesterol. Centrum has 100% of a handful of vitamins.

The cereal I eat is Total which has 100% of Vitamins A C E B6 B12 along with Calcium, iron, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, folic acid, pantotheric acid, zinc, and 40% vitamin D, 15% magnesium and 25% phosphorus.

I also take a 500mg Vitamin C complex which includes 100mg of phytonutrients from Nature Made in the morning and a straight Vitamin C of 1000mg with supper. I always take the vitamins before a meal.

Here is my question. What are the negative consequences to my body eating Total cereal with 100% of a bunch of vitamins and also taking Centrum Cardio which has 100% of a handful of vitamins?

Many Thanks!

Sincerely,

Mike

Answer
Mike,
The problem is fat soluble vitamins ( A,E,) and minerals (iron) which can make you ill. Also super supplementing C can cause your body to flush out many of the water soluble vitamins like the B vitamins leaving you with less than you need.

I would cut out all the extra C, but I see no issue with the vitamin and cereal combo.

Hope this helps,
Lela Simon
