Question
Hi, I wonder if I can rely on (( Dates )) carbs instead of complex carbs? I'm following a diet of 40% Protein - 40% Carbs - 20% Fat, I workout cardio 30-60 mins 6 days a week, and train with weights 3 days a week. I'm 5.6" tall male - 149lbs and aiming for 132lbs. As you know, "dates" contain fiber, and have no fat, and I have other sources of vitamins more than what I get from complex carb foods like oats and whole grains.
Please help. Thanks.

Answer
Dear MJ,

Fruits are a source of carbs, as are starches, but they are different types and contain different nutrients.  Certainly some of the 40% of calories in your diet should come from fruit and not all from starches, but whole grains and oats provide more thiamin and niacin than fruits, and these vitamins help the body effectively obtain energy from carbs.

Carbs from starches is also easier for the body to obtain energy... fructose has to  be absorbed, sent to the liver, and converted to glucose, so you're going to get quicker energy from carbs.  I would also suggest a variety of fruits and not just dates: lots of fruits have a high level of antioxidants and other nutrients that are just plain good for you!
