Gluten bloating?

Question
Hi
I havent had the tests done but my doctor thinks my abdominal distension (not fat) could be from gluten.
He says I should try probiotics and go off bread for a month and see how that goes.
I was never a big eater but always ate toast-sometimes thats all I ate. Never gave me indigestion but I always had a bulging tummy like I was pregnant, and often loose pale bowel movements.
I have gone without bread-its pretty tough-for a few days now and my tum tum feels way better and has gone down a belt notch.
Problem is I crave toast! I always had it for breakfast easpecially in the winter.
Is there any kind of gluten free or low bread available from the major food stores? What about sourdough?
Thanks.

Answer
Hi Vanessa,

It sounds likely that you are suffering from a reaction to gluten.  It's easy to try this elimination diet and just eat gluten-free for a few weeks to determine if you feel better. (As opposed to tests that require colonoscopy, biopsy, and other invasive procedures).

There are a lot of gluten free breads now. Potato bread made with potato flour and no wheat flour is the most popular.
If you have a 'health food' aisle in your favorite grocery store they will advertise several brands of gluten free bread--they are very popular now!

You'll also find gluten free cereals, crackers, cookies, and pasta--just find the brands that are gluten free which are readily available nowaday!
