Whither whey?

Question
Richard
This whey protein seems to be popular and all the health food stores stock it.
Is it just for those looking to bulk up as an addition to their regular diet, or is it a meal replacement? Some sites say it helps with weight loss as well.
I am not trying to bulk up, just the opposite. I am 53 and already quite muscular, I would like to get more ripped so to speak, especially in the abdomen.
I have increased the cardio to where I cant do anymore and cut back on the fats and carbs but I am not losing (or gaining).
I am having some success with yougurt to reduce the bloating, maybe if I mixed some yougurt with the whey in the morning for a smoothie?
Lots of brands out there too. What would you recommend if you did recommend?
Thanks!

Answer
Whey protein is best used directly following a workout to speed nutrients into your muscles. When you finish your workout, your muscles are screaming for protein. If you eat some chicken, your muscles don't get the protein right away because your stomach has to first break the chicken down, and it takes a while for that protein to get into your bloodstream. Whey protein is more easily and quickly digested. That's what it's for.

Getting "ripped" is just a matter of burning off body fat so you can see the muscles underneath your skin. You should reduce carb and fat, increase the amount of protein and green veggies you eat, and do lots of cardio in addition to your normal weight training routine. Oh, and NO alcohol. Ever.

Whey protein is good if you're trying to add mass (build muscle) or you want to have a small shake after your workout to aid in muscle repair. But, don't forget to count those calories. If you're taking in a 600-cal shake after a workout, then you're defeating the purpose of all of that cardio.
