weight loss during sleep

Question
Dear Richard, during the last four weeks i've been on a diet and weighing myself at night and in the a.m. why do i see such a huge difference in weight loss after sleeping? it is not unusual to go to bed at 196 and wake up 193. this 3 or 4 pound difference occurs every night. how do you lose 4 pounds sleeping? thanks, eric in nj

Answer
Don't weigh yourself more than once a week. Hourly variations in your weight can be caused by all kinds of things - mostly HYDRATION. That's right, drinking water and peeing. Look how much a gallon of water weighs.
