Oil question, coconut oils

Question
After consuming rancid fats and oils throughout my whole life, I am now trying to fix my diet in such a way that it can be healthiest for me and I would like to start with fixing my fats and oils. Correct me if I'm wrong, but based on my own research, all oils, especially polyunsaturated oils because they are so unstable, must be unrefined, organic, cold pressed, virgin and stored in dark glass bottles so that the benefits of the oil can be reaped. I have no problem finding olive, hemp, and other types of oils in all these criterions, but it is a bit tough for me to find a coconut oil that covers all those criterions. I have no problem finding a coconut oil that is organic, unrefined, cold pressed, and virgin, but it's the packaging that doesn't seem to match up. I have seen very many coconut oils being stored in PLASTIC jars that were clear. Is this acceptable, and will this make the oil rancid, free radical filled and unfit for consumption?

I know with polyunsaturated oils it is important that they are stored in dark, glass bottles in the fridge to prevent UV deterioration and oxidation. However, does this also apply to coconut oil as well? I was thinking coconut oil would be an exception because of how stable it is. What type of packaging do you think is a must for it? For example, is a glass container a must for it? Does it have to be amber or UV blocking?

Answer
Greetings dear Andrew,

Sounds like you are upgrading your diet and especially focusing on healthy fats since you have realized the dangers of commercially processed oils. I applaud you in your efforts!

Regarding packaging of coconut oil: IMO clear plastic is acceptable, however it is recommended that you store the oil out of direct sunlight. If that's questionable then it's probably better for you to get yours in some kind of opaque containers. In any case the plastic itself will not make the oil rancid, etc. Coconut oil is mostly saturated and therefore very stable. Unlike polyunsaturated oils, coconut oil does not require refrigeration.

Enjoy the Goodness of Coconut Oil!
