soup and triglycerides

Question
Hi Laurie,
I'm the one that asked you all the questions about fats a while ago. I learned so much. To be honest the whole thing was so confusing I ignored it for the longest time.

Well, now I have 2 more questions.
You said you had to know a lot of math so I'm going to ask you.

If a serving size of soup is 1 cup and has 110 calories to it,
then I add a cup of water to it, then my serving size becomes what?
Still 1 cup or 2?

Another question I have is about the triglycerides.
Mine are elvated although not bad enough yet to warrant new medince. I have been taking fish oil for a while now.
But are there any particular foods that I should be eating or avoiding to lower them?

thanks for your time,
Joyce

Answer
Hi Joyce and welcome back!!

First of all the soup.... IF it is the concentrated soup that tells you to mix it with water it will say "1 cup reconstituted soup" on the nutrient facts label. This means soup with water added.
But adding water to any liquid does not increase the serving size because you are not adding any more of the ingredients that provide nutrients. It's the same as having a bowl of soup (or glass of juice) and drinking a cup of water. One cup of skim milk has 80 calories and 8 grams of protein. If you pour in a cup of water you still have one cup of skim milk with 80 calories and 8 grams of protein,(plus one cup of water) right?

For high triglycerides be sure your blood test was done fasting. Triglycerides are mostly the intermediate product of carbohydrate digestion. After you eat bread, cereal, sweets or alcoholic beverages the body breaks down the carbs and decides what to do with them--either use them for energy or store them for later. When they are stored it is in the form of triglycerides. Eventually these move to fat storage areas but for some time (and in some people, continuously) they circulate in the blood.
To reduce triglyceride levels the fish oil is a proven supplement and along with that eating very few sweets and limiting intake of starches helps.... I would not advise avoiding carbohydrates, but keeping them down to 2-3 servings per meal, for instance (not piles of pasta or half a dozen rolls or huge slices of cake).
