Fish oil Supplement or Eating real fish?

Question
My question is whether its better to eat real fish over fish oil supplements. Because I read some articles about fish oil supplements containing some other chemical rather then the triglycerides that real fish has and that other chemical is bad for your liver.

Answer
Dear Ronald,

It is virtually always better to eat a real food than to take supplements.
I'm not sure of any chemicals you refer to in the supplements.

Whether it's vitamins, minerals, or other supplements the reason for people to take these is if they cannot get enough in their diet (such as taking calcium supplements for someone who cannot drink milk). Eating fish several times a week is usually the best recommendation. Some people benefit from higher amounts of fish oil, necessitating supplements, based on the advice of their personal physician.
