weight gain?

Question
Hi, I am a male who recently started to try and gain weight. After going to the gym for half a year, and getting brilliant results in cardiovascular activities, i still saw no change in my weight lifting program. Because of this (and because people have told me my whole life iam to skinny) I am now taking mass gaining shakes (3000kj per shake) morning and evening. I have been keeping track of my weight, weighing myself first thing in the morning after having gone to the toilet, and have noticed abit of a patern let me share this with you:
Day1-59.1 kg
Day2-59.1 kg
Day3-59.1 kg
Day4-59.1 kg
Day5-59.4 kg
Day6-59.9 kg
Day7-60.4 kg
Day8-61.2 kg
Day9-60.3 kg
Day10-60.7 kg
Day11-60.6 kg

this is more out of curiosity than anything, it seems for the first days my body was reluctant to gain weight, then it increased drastically, but went back down, and now it seems its fluctating day by day. If you have any theories on why my body weight is fluctating so much i would love to hear them. Cheers.

Answer
Hi,

It is very difficult to explain why you have daily fluctuations and I advise not to watch every day your weight. Mainly because a cup of water ways a pound, so if you held more water more in 1 day than the next you would see  a difference slightly. The problem is that weight can consist of many things, bone, fluids, tissue. Muscle etc...

So I would only weigh myself every few weeks, and also get a body fat % to find out exactly what it is that is going up and down over a period of months.

You could well be putting on more muscle and reducing fat. Muscle density is 1.06 g/ml and fat density is (about) 0.9 g/ml. So, one liter of muscle would weight 1.06 kg and one liter of
Fat would weight 0.9 kg. In other words, muscle is about 18% denser than fat.

Thanks.
