Juice instead of water

Question
Hi,

I know its important for people to drink lots of water. But I was wondering, since I don't like to drink water that much, is it okay to drink only juice/tea/milk instead of water? Or will that have some kind of negative effect on my kidneys or anything?

Answer
Hello,

Water is the best fluid to drink generally for many reasons, the most important is that it is at a similar chemical level as existing fluids in your body so when you drink it, water will get to your body very quick. All fluids you consume have to pass thru a membrane in your stomach to get into your blood system before transported around your body. Sugary fluids, alcohol and other things have to absorb water into the stomach from your body before being allowed to pass into your blood stream.

So for quick hydration, especially if you workout a lot or live in a hot climate, water ifs the best.
But juice, tea and milk are ok as they have high water content. Try not to drink too much juice as there is a high amount of citric acid in juices (except pineapple which is alkaline).

And remember tea has caffeine.

Your kidneys will be able to handle most fluids in moderation, but water is always the best to use the most.

Thanks.
