Breakfast and metabolism issues?

Question
Phil
I am 50, always been somewhat overweight, but some years heavier than others.
I have noticed that there are periods that last for weeks/months when I dont wake up hungry and so I skip breakfast.
Even though I eat the same total amount amount of calories during the day as I do the times I do eat breakfast,I seem to lose weight during these times. Then I go back to breakfast eating and for some reason gain weight again.
Skipping breakfast is of course a 'cardinal sin' according to the experts. However I did a little poll recently among my friends and co-workers and the slim people dont eat breakfast-just coffee, and the overweight people all eat breakfast. Some of the overweight ones are like me in that they eat the same or less than the slim ones except for breakfast.
All I can think of is that the 'breakfast charges up your metabolism' theory is all wrong, or at least not for everyone. Maybe for some the metabolism is slow in the morning and eating just slows it more?
I am definately not a morning person. I dont feel fully charged until noon.
Maybe its a breakfast food industry conspiracy? When I was in Asia last year breakfast was a cup of coffee, a light lunch, big supper. They are a lot slimmer over there too.
I have also discovered that if I exercise in the morning on an empty stomach, as is reccomended by some for weight loss, it doesnt work for me at all. But, if I exercise in the afternoon or early evening-when my metabolism is fully charged- it seems to help.My neighbour is 75. He eats a huge supper, then goes for an evening stroll. Skinny as a rake.
Thanks for your thoughts!

Answer
Gord you are onto something. The fact that just because we are all humans doesn't mean what works for most work for all. Science is the same way it only proves the majority there are always outliers.

I would say though that it is most likely your eating more in total its pretty much impossible to gain weight when eating breakfast and not if your calories are the same the the table would turn toward the breakfast person as they have a day of activity to burn what they put in their pie whole.

It could also be what you eat, what the food consist of a calorie is not a calorie especially as far as health goes.

last thing. Lean is not, does not, and never will have anything to do with health or fitness. that very new and some of the most unfit unhealthy people I know are some of the leanest i know. We need to remove that from our society. Fitness and ability is measures by what you can do not how you look and health is measured by health markers that again  have little to do with your looks.

In the end your right though we need to find what works for us. Always be open to try things and sort the cream from the crop.

Oh and I would Never ever have anyone train high intensity on an empty stomach they are setting themselves up for disaster, just to have poor performance and lose muscle mass. Where as is they eat first and wait they can perform well. the calories burnt during the training is minimal as to what is burnt for the hours and days after.

Cheers.
