Question
Hi Lawrence
I have entered a 'biggest loser' contest at work. Some of the prizes are pretty good, and besides I would like to look a little better for the warmer weather.
Also, a co-worker recently died from a heart attack brought on by his obesity and lack of exercise, so he is also a big motivation.
Right now I am 52, 5"7" and 245 pounds. I am muscular, so most of the flab is on my belly.
I have discovered that I can eat 1000 calories a day and be pretty full. No red meat or fats at all, lots of fruit and veggies, whole grain carbs, etc. I also discoverd that if I stay on my elliptical for an hour I can burn off 1000 calories according to the gauge. I go steady and dont get sore, just work up a great sweat! I have been working out on it regularly so I am not new to exercise.
So, if I eat 1000 calories and burn off 1000 (in addition to what I burn off at work, etc) I should lose weight really fast huh?
BTW I wouldnt plan to do this for the long term, and I plan on taking Sundays off, go for a big brunch after church, then just lay around! Thanks for your thoughts!

Answer
Barry I hear what your saying and at 52 years of age and 245 lbs you are in need to take it long term and correct your serious weight imbalance. Your correct body weight is around 155 lbs on the high side. Your current BMI is 38.5. Normal BMI is under 25. Belly fat is the most dangerous type for men. I would suggest that you get a physical with blood work and meet with a nutritionist before your weight catches up with you. Also get a personal trainer to help you not to exercise but to help you exercise safely. You need to monitor your blood pressure and heart rate so you do not hurt your self during your workout. I see you want to do something to help yourself and that is good, but a little advice from professionals in your area can guide you through it.
I have been where you are almost exactly, except I am taller and younger. It took getting sick for me to correct what I already knew would eventually happen. I knew better and did not listen to my own advice. Guess what? I do the right thing now. I went from 247 to 179lbs and fixed my issue's. I wish you luck and thank you for writing. Once you are checked out by a doctor to see if you are healthy enough to exercise and at what level you can proceed feel free to write back if you have any other questions.
