sugar alcohol

Question
Hi.  I have a question about sugar alcohol.  I know added sugar is bad to consume, but what about sugar alcohol?  What exactly is it and is it an unhealthy added sugar like high-fructose corn syrup?  Thanks

Answer
Sugar alcohol is a combination of alcohol and carbohydrate.  It typically has about 1.5 calories of energy per gram.  It is not easily absorbed like regular sugar so it has little effect on blood glucose and insulin levels.  An example of sugar alcohol would be sorbitol.  Sugar Alcohols are not artificial sweeteners.

High fructose corn syrup is a sugar from corn, it is not sugar alcohol.  This type of sugar impacts triglycerides and can make cells insulin resistant leading to diabetes.
