What is going on and what can I do about it?

Question
I have gained 9 pounds in 2 days.

I am a healthy woman in my 60s. I normally eat about 1400-1500 calories a day, when I eat all meals at home. Even when I eat a meal out, about once a week usually, I try to keep total calories below 2000. I don't drink alcohol.

When I went in for my annual checkup two days ago, my weight was 132, which is normal for me. Blood work and unalysis were normal. I had a celebratory hamburger and hot fudge sundae for lunch, and bigger dinner than usual, total calories for the day probably 2500-3000.

Yesterday I went out for dinner to celebrate a friends birthday and had another big meal, with dessert. Total calories for the day, around 2000- 2500.

When I weighed myself today, I expected moderate weight gain. I was stunned when the scales read 141. I checked the scales with a 100-lb bag of dog food. They are accurate. I then tried on the same clothes I wore to the checkup and they still fit as usual.

What is going on? I don't belive this has anything to do with retaining water as I do not show any swelling in my feet, legs or ankles.

Also, what can I do about this?

Thanks

Jo

Answer
I did the same thing after my physical, don't worry to much about this just resume your normal eating habits and this weight should disappear in a few days. What happens is that your body is a creature of habit it likes continuity. When you eat something extra that is bad it can have the effect that you are experiencing, when you eat something good that your body may be lacking the effect can go in the opposite direction and you will loose weight even if it was more calories then you usually consume. This acquires because the food that you splurged with will either have a negative reaction and slow your metabolism or a positive reaction and increase your metabolism.
The key is not to stress but to resume a normal and healthy diet that will adjust you body back to where it was prior to that yummy burger. When I got my results back from my physical I went to Red Robin and had a big juicy burger and then went to Friendly's and had a huge ice cream to boot, but I only put on 3 pound. I gained less then you but I ran 3.5 miles later that evening which kicked all that excess insulin out of my body and made my metabolism get back to work. The weight you gained is not 100% true weight gain. This is just a reaction caused by the way your body reacted to the food. You would of had to eaten 31,500.00 calories to actually have gained 9 pounds in one day. Hopefully this helps you to understand and if you have any more questions feel free to right back.
