how can I lose weight healthily, and keep it off?

Question
Hi, my name is Sarah. I'm a 17, 158cm (approx 5ft 2), and I currently weight 76kg (163 pounds). I've tried so many diets, but all that happens is I end up gorging on junk food again. I try to stick to a diet plan, but because the rest of my family are not eating as healthily, I end up eating junk again. My self- esteem in really low, and I want to lose 26kg. What's a healthy solution, and how long will it take for me to lose the weight? Thankyou so much.

Answer
Dear Sarah, At age 17 you and only you are responsible for the food you eat and the exercise you do. There will always be junk food around, so try not blame anybody else for the junk food you choose to eat. That said, write down your goals for weight loss and a time limit to lose that weight. Losing 26kg or 57 pounds is a lot of weight to lose. I suggest starting with 25 pounds or 11 kg. It will take 2-3 months to lose 11 kg, you can lose it faster if you really increase your exercise to 1 hour of fast walking per day. Thirty minutes of walking everyday is needed to lose any weight plus eating on average 1500 calories per day. Every food contains calories, some more than others. Read labels and keep track of the total calories you eat each day. As long as you stay under 1500 per day you will lose about 1 kg per week, more the first week due to water weight. Hope that helps, Laura Kraemer,Slimkids.com
