Mini gastric bypass

Question
Hello!
I have been doing a lot of research on WLS, and am finding conflicting information on the MGB. I have seen scientific research papers and anecdotal evidence that this is a great and less complicated surgery and is as effective as any other WLS, and then I have also read conflicting anectdotal evidence that this is "a waste of time". Since very few (if any) Canadian doctors offer this surgery, I was thinking of getting this done in the States, but I was wondering what your information on the process (ie the success/failure of the surgery) tells you about this procedure.
Is this something you would recommend? perform?

thanks

Suzanne

Answer
Suzanne,
I regret to say that I have never encountered scientific data in favor of the Mini Gastric Bypass that I could believe in.  The favorable reports that I have seen were created by a small group of surgeons who had an interest in promoting the procedure.

My personal experience with post-op MGB patients, as well as my understanding of how the operation is constructed, indicates that outcomes with the MGB are highly variable and are often poor.

As a general principle, it is best for you to have your surgical care close to home so that you have the optimal possibility of long term follow up.  You are very likely to do well having a gastric bypass or a gastric sleeve performed by an experienced bariatric surgeon in your area.

Best of luck!
Dr JP
