Question
what does ND stand for shouldn't a registered dietitian be the nutrition resource?

Answer
Dear Ann,

The Bariatric Surgery area of AllExperts is for people looking for information on all aspects of bariatric surgery.  If you were to look at my AllExperts profile (which I can tell you did not do), you would see that I am not a registered dietitian, but a primary care physician who has spent the past 5 years exclusively in bariatric surgery.  My greatest expertise is in pre and postoperative nutrition.

In fact, AllExperts has this specialty available to people like yourself because I asked them to create it.  2 years ago, I had noticed that with all the areas that About.com addresses, they did not have a health category for Obesity.  I thus petitioned the Experts group to create the category of Obesity with the subgroup of Bariatric Surgery.  They agreed to do so if I would agree to be one of the experts.

Those of us who act as experts for About.com do so as volunteers.  You actually don't have to ask a question of anyone you don't wish to ask a question of.  You can look at the profiles of all the experts in a given category and choose specifically who you ask.  If you have a question for a bariatric surgeon, we have a wonderful caring surgeon in our category, Dr John Pilcher.  If you have a real question for me, please feel free to write back at any time.

In Health,

Dr. Jacques
