Blood pressure weight loss

Question
Hi John
I am 49,pretty healthy but overweight. I have always had blood pressure in the high normal range since childhood. Coincidently(?)I have always had difficulty losing weight even though I am active and eat healthy.
I have been checked no thyroid or other issues other than the blood pressure.
My wife,a nurse, checked my BP a couple months ago and it was very high-160/96 I think.
I decided to take the natural route first and began taking CoQ10 and garlic supplements, exercising even more, and reducing carbs.Total calories was a little less than usual.
My blood pressure began going down and now is normal 120/87.
I have noticed that I am actually losing a little weight now.
Was the elevated pressure all those years the reason I couldnt lose weight?

Answer
Bud,
This is a potentially interesting correlation, but I am not aware of any data that points to high blood pressure as a cause for obesity.  (On the other hand, obesity certainly does increase the risk and severity of high blood pressure).

Best wishes,
Dr JP
