I want to be straight forward and honest with you. I found this sight through a google search on nutrition for post WLS endurance athletes. You answered a question for someone who was questioning if she was consuming enough calories to suit her workouts. I was impressed by the answer given even though I know it was from an Atkins style point of view.

I had my surgery in March of 2001 and by 2003 I started cycling not realizing I would get bit by the bug. I quickly realized that the diet prescribed was totally insufficient for what I was doing but no one in the WLS nutrition field wanted to help worse yet they told me to give up the goal. This was especially true when I decided I wanted to do 4 Double Centuries(200 mile one day rides) in a 3 month period.

I found a sports nutritionist who was willing to help me and we developed a plan. I completed those 4 doubles in the spring of 2006 and I still ride today. If someone were to ask how they could successful complete a marathon or an event like mine where do we turn to? I burn 10,000 calories on a double century and just over 5000 on a single. That is more than many WLS patients weekly intake.

Is there anyone doing research on sport's nutrition for post WLS patients? With surgeries being done on teenagers are they going to be told that they're new life cant include extreme sports?

I am asking this not to cause trouble but I get ask all the time for help and I am not a nutritionist. I go to one but we worked a plan that works for me I don't know if it will work for others. I was told in 2005 if I chose this path within two year's I will have reversed my surgery and be back where I started. I was 182 lbs when I started the quest in 2006. I have put on 10 lbs because of an injury that has cut back my training overt the past 2 years. I have dropped that by 4lbs in the past 2 months so I would consider my quest a success.

I am not really the right person to answer this question, however, it happens that I just heard an outstanding exercise physiologist give a lecture on managing endurance/extreme athletes after bariatric surgery.  I just sent a note to the the course director to see if I could get her contact.  If you email me at my office: [email protected], I can probably connect the two of you.  I think that would be the best way to get the information you need if you don't mind.
