I need help

Question
Im getting what i think is what they call the Roux-en-y. but im supposed to be on a liquid diet, for 2 weeks and i get my surgery on the march 8th. is there anyway that my liver could go back to normal size. because i cheated several times on the diet.

Answer
Hi Bianca:

You still have a few days.  It's not the fact that it's liquid that helps shrink the liver, it has more to do with the liquid diets usually being low-calorie and lower in carbs.  So, if you need to cheat, try and go for something like a cheese stick or sugar-free yogurt.  Now, usually your doctor will want you on clear liquids the day before (sometimes two days before) surgery.  Then, it's much more critical to stick to the diet--no matter what.  The goal is to ensure that your intestines and stomach are free of food for the surgery.

Every little bit you do will help.  It's really to help make the surgery easier (and less risky) so that your doctor lessens the risk of nicking your liver.  A lot of surgeons (and patients) also like the fact that it usually jump starts the weight loss process.  If it makes you feel any better, not all surgeons require it... and some require it only for people with higher BMIs.

Honestly, if you're going to cheat on a liquid diet, much safer to do so now...then in the one or two days pre-surgery or the few weeks post.  Cheating then can really cause major problems--so just knuckle down.  The good thing is that after surgery, your hunger level should be drastically reduced, so it will be easier.  Really.

Don't beat yourself up about cheating and don't let yourself (or others) tell you it means you won't be successful.  You don't have your "tool" yet--and it's a totally different ballgame post-surgery.  Plenty of people go on major "last supper" binges and still end up being successful.  You can be too. :)

Good luck with your surgery.  I hope you have a wonderful surgery and wonderful weight loss journey.
