absence of throid and gastric bypass surgery approval

Question
Hi I am in the process of getting gastric surgery I have done all of the teats and appointments asked of me, I am just waiting on approval to be covered by ohip. It is taking awhile. Will the fact that they found out through ultrasound that I have no thyroid left that it is burnt out, but my blood shows all normal levels with me taking 200 mcg of replacement to be working fine. Will this effect me getting approved for surgery, I would think that if my TSH level is normal and my T3 and T4 level is fine on the replacement that it should be ok is this true, can you please let me know, thanks.
Beverly

Answer
Hi Beverly:

Congratulations on jumping through the hoops. :)  I honestly don't know whether or not that would be a concern for approval by OHIP.  My guess is it shouldn't affect approval at all--but as I have no idea what goes through the minds of the people approving surgery, I can't say for 100% sure.  On another note, I know quite a few people who have gone from Ontario to Michigan for surgery (both gastric sleeve and DS), and have been quite successful.  I hope you are approved soon and that your surgery and post-op goes well.

Kind Regards,
Karla
