Javier’s Weight Loss Interview!

How much did you lose?
I’ve lost 145 pounds and my waist went from 48 inches down to 33 inches!.

When did you become unhappy with your weight?
Ever since kindergarten. I knew being fat was a target for abuse, loneliness and bullying. I’ve been overweight all of my life until the age of 24 when I decided to make a change.

What made you decide to lose weight?
I was in a serious relationship for 3 years and I left my family for her. Once she cheated on me and left me, I knew I was emotionally damaged and I had to fix myself. It was my breaking point.

What were the most important changes you made to lose weight?
The first thing was eliminating my favorite foods like tortillas and pies, then fried foods. I always wanted to be “built” so lifting weights was going to be my go-to!

What was the most challenging thing you had to deal with during your weight loss journey?
My surroundings. The fact that I was on my own about how I felt and what I did. Many people would be nice about it but nobody ever fully understood. While I was dieting and training, they thought I was wasting my time.

How long did it take you to start to see results?
Within the first couple of months I noticed changes. At first, I just wanted to be under 300 pounds but when I reached that goal I felt I could do even better if I reached 260 pounds and it went from there.

How long did it take for you to reach your current weight?
I lost all the weight in 12 months and had an average weight loss of about 12 pounds per month, but to be where I am now it took a total of 6 years.

How long have you maintained your weight loss and what are the most important factors for keeping it off?
I’ve maintained it for about 5 years now. The biggest factors were that I never stopped lifting and never told myself I couldn’t have things like pie and junk food. I knew I had to be smart about it and find my own balance.

What keeps you motivated to continue your weight loss success?
Honestly, my wife and son are the biggest motivation. After losing 3 of my brothers (2 within just 5 years) they give me purpose and faith. They want me to be at my best and I deserve to be at my best. I’ve never had a dad so being able to be one and also a husband just makes me want to give them the world!

How has your life changed now that you have lost weight?
I love it! I love that I can help break the molds of what people think is impossible. Having strength and the ability to impact lives is great. I can play with my son until he naps now! My confidence has also increased. There is so much that I’m grateful for with this journey!

Do you have any advice for others who are trying to lose weight?
Keep it simple and just use your common sense. It’s easy to workout and eat clean for one day but the hardest part will be the consistency to keep going week in and week out! Don’t overwhelm yourself because it does take time but through it all just try to keep a strong heart because that will be key!

How did ShapeFit help you reach your weight loss goals?
ShapeFit.com was a useful tool that worked very well with my training!

Javier’s Weight Loss Tips!

Weight Loss Tip #1:
Weight train! Most people choose to do cardio and a lot of it, but weight training will shape you and help you in the long run!

Weight Loss Tip #2:
Train your eating habits! We are so used to eating a certain way that it becomes the breaking point in most journeys. Focus on your nutrition daily because every small change helps!

Weight Loss Tip #3:
Train your heart! Our mind races and always tries to jeopardize ourselves due to habits but when you train your heart, remind yourself why it needs to beat and function at its best. You will have more good days than bad!

Weight Loss Tip #4:
Pick supportive friends! Some folks will never understand but it’s not their job to. Find friends and loved ones who will back you no matter what. It makes a huge difference!

Weight Loss Tip #5:
Make protein your go-to snack! We often get confused about what to eat when we are hungry and that can force us to reach for something with high sugar or fat and no nutritional benefits. Instead, reach for something with high protein because more times than not it will have fewer calories, control your appetite better and help fuel your muscles better than a high-carb snack.
