Want to get rid of your back fat? CoolSculpting by Zeltiq claims to crystallise the fat cells, causing them to “self-destruct”

GOODBYE:
BACK FAT

The treatment: CoolSculpting by Zeltiq

The G.O: An applicator is attached to your trouble spot (back, love handles, inner thigh, etc.), exposing fat cells to precise cooling. According to cosmetic surgeon Dr Daniel Fleming, from Queensland’s Cosmetic Surgery Institute of Australia, this crystallises the fat cells and causes them to “self-destruct”. The fat is then naturally eliminated from the body. There are no needles and no downtime.

The numbers: About 20 per cent of the fat cells in the treated area are removed with each treatment, says Dr Fleming. Sydney’s Splash Clinic, which also administers the treatment, suggests a circumference reduction of a given area of one to two centimetres per session.

The timeframe: This typically requires one or two treatments lasting about an hour each. It takes around eight weeks to see the full results from each treatment. The Splash Clinic advises leaving four weeks between treatments.

What the expert says: Dr Fleming says CoolSculpting achieves a similar effect to liposuction – without surgery.

“It is ideal for patients who are not grossly overweight but have stubborn areas, like a muffin top,” he says. Unlike weight loss through diet and exercise, CoolSculpting can spot reduce, according to the cosmetic surgeon, who uses the technique in his practice. “Weight loss does not reshape specific areas, as all of your fat cells shrink at the same rate. If you want to spot reduce, you must permanently remove fat cells from the area so there are fewer of them.”

Cost: $1,100 per treatment.
