The Basics Of Losing Body Fat

Despite what advertisements make you believe, losing body fat can sometimes be difficult. There is no ‘magic’ weight loss aid that works for everyone, and it can take time, patience and effort to really see results. That being said, there are some body fat basics that are important to know on your journey to fitness and health. We break them down for you here:

Weight Loss vs. Fat Loss:

One basic diet principle is the difference between losing weight and losing fat. Weight can include muscle, while fat is pure body fat. So the goal of your workout and eating regime should be to lose pure body fat and retain muscle mass.

Macronutrients:

Macros are the pieces from food that your body derives energy from. They come in protein, fat and carbohydrates. You can get these three components working for you by sourcing them from the right foods. You should derive protein from meats, beans, tofu, nuts and yogurt. Fat should come from omega-3 rich salmon, avocados, nuts, chia seeds and coconut oil. Good carbs come from whole grains, brown rice, potatoes and corn.

Exercise:

Working out is wonderfully beneficial for your body. To lose body fat and gain muscle effectively, the best forms of exercise are weight lifting, HIIT workouts, cardio and callisthenics. Working out ups your heart rate and boosts your metabolism. Weight lifting can even trigger a response in your body that makes it burn up calories and shed fat when you’re not working out. But exercise alone is sustainable for losing fat. It should always be coupled with a good, healthy diet in order to see results!

What are your thoughts? Do you have any tips and tricks to losing fat?
