Want to Lose Weight? Research Shows It Might Be Time to Cut Out Alcohol

We all know alcohol is an indulgence. If we drank it like water all day long, you can bet our health would deplete in no time. But what about just a couple cocktails on a Friday night? While letting loose and allowing yourself to enjoy a good buzz feels good, it doesn’t exactly coincide with weight loss goals, and not necessarily because of the alcohol itself.

While a rum punch is a surefire way to pack down excess amount of sugar, other options like vodka and soda seem like a much safer route. And while one comes in at just 100 calories, it’s the impaired judgement that may cause you to consume more calories than that.

A new study published in the journal Obesity took a look at what happens after alcohol consumption, specifically the brain’s role in mediating caloric intake. To examine this, researchers had a group of women consume alcohol via an IV, while another group was given a placebo. The discovery is what many of us probably would have expected: those subjects who ingested the alcohol ate more food at their next meal than those who were given the placebo. Scientists call this the “apéritif effect.”

So while sloshing a few back seems like a good idea at the time, if you’re looking to slim down, your best bet is to opt out of alcohol consumption altogether.

What do you think of these findings?
