The Goal in Sight: Plan for Weight Loss

Being overweight leads to many health risks and diseases like diabetes, that is why it is essential to start following a weight loss plan so as these risks and diseases can be prevented. In this regard, it is important to keep in mind certain important questions which will help one in achieving this long term goal.

First of all, weight loss plan has to be formulated keeping in mind the long term goal of attaining a healthy mind, body and lifestyle. This would entail many short term weight loss and body toning goals also. The weight loss plan has to be healthy and sensible, crash diets or fad diets neither work nor are beneficial for the body.

Health experts suggest some basic measures to ensure one is on the right track for weight loss plan.

1. Sensible and rationale plan

One should keep in mind various factors like - age, body type, lifestyle, workload etc. before zeroing down on a long term goal to be achieved. Deciding on achieving a particular body mass has to be decided carefully - one cannot weigh the same at the age of 50 as at the age of 15!

This would also mean taking care of body mass index or BMI which gives a good indication of exactly how much weight loss is required for a particular body. Usually, the ideal BMI range is considered to be somewhere between 19 and 24.9, as specified scientifically. This means that usually, BMI between 25 and 29.9 is considered overweight and above 30 is considered obese.

BMI is a good indicator because it takes into account one's height as well as weight and thus helps in formulating a sensible plan for weight loss.

2. Be healthy, not egoistic

Treating the objective of plan for weight loss as a means of looking cool or chic or achieving the latest beauty queen look is plain stupid. A good weight loss plan simply takes care of the fact that one should feel and be healthy and always be energized to lead an active, healthy and resourceful life.

3. Feeling healthy is more important than fixating on the weight scale

A good weight loss plan encourages one to adopt a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise, sporting activities, healthy eating habits incorporated in one's daily life. It does not mean being fixated with the weighing scale as to how many pounds have been lost. If one adopts a healthy consistent lifestyle, one can be sure of following a weight loss plan successfully.

4. Small steps, giant leap

It's through regular small steps that ultimately a giant leap can be taken. Rather than going on a crash diet approach, go for small steps like - walking a mile extra this week, swimming an extra hour the next week and so on.

5. Encourage thyself

Nobody is perfect. This means that sometimes one might temporarily not be able to follow certain steps, say, at festival time one is not able to stay away from plum cake or stuffed turkey, then look at the next possible opportunity to get back on track. Keep encouraging yourself to make sure you don't get disheartened midway.

6. Measure your success

Keep the goals measurable, even if small. Such as - "I will exercise 15 minutes more this week" rather than "I will feel more energetic this week." Keeping measurable goals means being more focused and also helps in more self-encouragement and self-motivation.
