Your Ideal Weight

The Quick Weight Loss Diet will help you attain your ideal weight quickly. This "ideal weight table" based on my findings differs from others. I don't believe that you should be guided by what the average weight is for persons of your height but rather by what your ideal weight should be for maximum health, well-being and long life. The average weights listed by others are often too high, in my opinion, because too many Americans are overweight and this raises the averages above the ideal weight.

I don't give figures by "type of frame" because this is misleading to many. What comprises a small, medium or large frame isn't easy for the individual to decide for himself. Nearly all my overweight patients have claimed to have large bone structure although only a small percentage were in that category. Very few chose to consider themselves as having a small frame because it would mean that their weight should be even lower.

There are too many variations for you to be able to determine correctly what kind of frame and bone structure category fits you. Many people have broad shoulders and a small pelvis. Others have just the opposite. Some have a thin chest and heavy legs and thighs. Some have short, thick necks but with thin hands and arms, and large feet and legs梠r just the opposite.

I recommend that you aim for your weight listed on the following Weight and Daily Calorie Table, a few pounds one way or the other; lower is better than higher, The lower figure is the "ideal weight" (which may be called "desirable weight" by some statisticians or doctors). The higher figure is the "average weight" for the height. These figures are for men and women aged 25 and over, in stockinged feet, and without jackets. Note also your daily calorie intake to maintain ideal weight.

(tables missing due voluntary work)

The preceding weight table is figured generally as follows:

WOMEN aged 25 or over: 5 feet?00 pounds. For every inch above 5 feet, add 5 pounds per inch for average weight; from that figure subtract about 10 percent for ideal weight; the figures give you the range between ideal and average weight as a guide. For 18 to 25 years of age, subtract 1 pound for each year under 25. For example, a girl of 19,5' 4" tall, ideal weight?02 pounds, average weight?14 pounds.

MEN aged 25 or over: 5 feet梟o pounds. For every inch over 5 feet, add 5 1/2 pounds per inch for average weight; from that figure subtract about 10% for ideal weight; the figures give you the range between ideal and average weight as a guide. For 18 to 25 years of age, subtract 1 pound for each year under 25. For example, a young man of 21,5' 10" tall, ideal weight?46 pounds, average weight?61 pounds.

ADDED SUGGESTIONS: If you're a professional in the theatrical or entertainment fields, a clothes model, an athlete or a dancer, it is best that your weight be about 5 pounds less than the ideal weights listed.

If you have been considerably overweight for years, I recommend that you reduce with the Quick Weight Loss Diet to within 5 to 15 pounds of the average weight for your height. After maintaining that figure for six months to a year, I suggest that you reduce further to your ideal weight and maintain it thereafter.

CALORIE INTAKE: If you wish to calculate your daily calorie intake according to the average weight for your height, figure 12 to 15 calories per pound.

For example, if the average weight for your height according to the preceding table is 120 pounds: 120 X 12 = 1,440 calories; 120 X 15 = 1,800 calories. Your calorie intake to maintain that weight would be 1,440 to 1,800 daily. In reducing, you add up everything and eat 1,440 to 1,800 calories daily (if you're overweight you're now consuming many more calories than that). But this type of attempted self-discipline which results usually in slow weight loss rarely works.

Ineffective Balanced Dieting Is Useless

An advertisement for the National Livestock and Meat Board was headlined, "The Secret of Weight Control: Cutting Down桸ot Out!" It went on to state, "You don't need to be scientific about what you eat, just sensible ... and forget about fads. Eat a variety of foods and not too many calories, that's the way to good nutrition. Not a very complicated idea, but a sound one!"

All that is true as far as it goes, which is far short of the reducer's goal. Balanced eating is a very "sensible" system. But for most overweights it just doesn't work. And if it doesn't work for you then the concept of balanced dieting is useless for you because it doesn't take off your excess weight.

There's no question in the minds of these people of wanting to be slim. The question is how you can accomplish it realistically and surely. Hundreds, thousands of persons have told me, "Doctor, I've tried to cut down on my eating and on calories but I just can't. I've failed dozens of times." Am I, as a doctor, then supposed to fail my patients?

According to those who advocate balanced eating only, one should say in effect, "I can't help you if you won't regulate your eating and limit yourself to smaller portions of only the foods on a balanced diet list." But I know that most overweights will fail on such advice just as surely as if I said, "No special diet, just balanced eating梐nd buy your clothes two sizes too big."

I've had to find out over the years, by trial and error, what will help most overweights to reduce, not just what they should do but what they will do. Accordingly I've devised these quick loss diets, methods and specific instructions and recommendations. My experience has proved that these techniques work.
