Does Diabetes Cause Weight Loss?

Anyone experiencing sudden inexplicable weight loss has reasons to worry. Sudden weight loss is our body’s emergency reaction to something really bad happening within. Can diabetes cause weight loss?

Diabetes Study

Untreated diabetes (Type 1 and Type 2) will cause weight loss:

In a diabetic, glucose present the blood is not broken down to release energy. But the body needs energy for daily activities. Even thinking requires energy. So to address the imbalance, the diabetic’s body resorts to breaking down fat to release energy. Where no fat is available, it will break down muscle tissues. Both result in weight loss.

Let us understand why diabetes causes weight loss:

All activity requires energy. Thinking, breathing and even sleeping requires energy. Energy is produced through the chemical reaction between insulin and glucose. In a diabetic, either the lack of insulin, inadequate quantity of insulin or insulin resistance means that there is either an underproduction of energy or no production of energy.

Without energy the body cannot survive so as an ultimate self-sacrifice, the body resorts to breaking down available stores of fat. If fat is not available, it will resort to breaking down muscle tissue. The loss of weight is directly proportional to the quantum of fat or muscle that is converted into energy. This is why untreated diabetes cause weight loss.

Diabetes causes weight loss resulting in deadly consequences!

When a diabetic’s body converts fat or muscle into energy, a deadly by-product called Ketones is produced. Ketones makes the blood acidic (called Ketoacidosis). As the acidity levels in the blood rise, the diabetic’s body is unable to handle the situation and resorts to a temporary shutdown, i.e. loss of consciousness. This is also why untreated diabetes is also likened to “a runaway freight train”. The reactions that are setoff will ultimately result in death.
