What is the Better Motivator for Weight Loss?

Quite often we think we are motivated to do something, such as weight loss, because we hate what we see when we look in the mirror. We are tricked into believing that we can accomplish something because we loathe our current state of affairs. As if hate is ever a good (or even effective) motivation for anything! The truth is love and imagination (in the form of positive imagery) are a much better motivator in reaching any goal we have set for ourselves. Consider a couple of quotes from learned and accomplished people:

Weight Loss

Must ReadHow to Inspire yourself to Start your Diet

You control your future, your destiny. What you think about comes about. By recording your dreams and goals on paper, you set in motion the process of becoming the person you most want to be. Put your future in good hands – your own. -Mark Victor Hansen

“When you develop yourself to the point where your belief in yourself is so strong that you know that you can accomplish anything you put your mind to, your future will be unlimited.” -Brian Tracy

Read those quotes again. Do they sound like “haters”? They are absolutely the opposite! And so it goes – our goals, even weight loss, are most likely to be reached by recording what we desire, thinking about it a lot, and believing that we can attain what we desire. If we get stuck thinking about what we hate (our 20 pounds or more of excess weight), we are most likely to keep it because that is what we thought about over and over and over again, unwittingly attracting it to ourselves. Written in 1902 by James Allen is a book called, As a Man Thinketh. It is the perfect formulation for changing a life (read chapter 3, and look for this sentence: “Change of diet will not help a man who…”)

Visualize Yourself 20 lbs. Lighter

You won’t often find this as part of a weight loss plan or diet. But truthfully, it is one of the most important steps to take of all! Usually with a weight loss system or diet you are left to find the motivation by yourself, and rarely is visualization a part of it (although some of the more holistic weight loss programs do include visualization). Try this fun exercise for visualizing yourself with less weight. Follow these instructions:

  1. Goto PicMD
  2. Click on PicMD fit (the third option on the page),
  3. Now upload a pic of yourself (a full body shot), or if you’re not ready for that, use the model and follow the instructions onscreen for visualizing the weight loss.

4. Now toggle the “Before” and “After” as many times as you please to see the drastic difference. This is the kind of exercise that you need to garner the motivation you need for such an ambitious goal. Seeing yourself 20 lbs., 20%, (or whatever figure you choose) lighter is a better motivator than feeling sorry for yourself and dwelling on what you don’t like, don’t you think?

Add Some Emotion to the Equation

Besides visualizing, which is in and of itself very important, another added ingredient for becoming 20 lbs. lighter is to (as the title of this article says) use your imagination to determine how you would feel once you are 20 lbs. lighter than you are now. Do you have back or knee problems? Losing 20 lbs. would put quite a bit less pressure on your knees, and your back. Dr. Andre Panagos, co-director of The Spine Center at New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York has stated, “Although research on weight loss and back pain is minimal, in my clinic, every single person who loses a significant amount of weight finds their pain to be significantly improved.” Walking around pain-free (or with a significant reduction of such) would change your life. That’s a very positive emotion to dwell on! And here are some other benefits of weight loss as described by Birdie Varnedore, M.D. on losing 10% of your body weight (that’s 20 lbs. if you weight 200 lbs.) –

  1. If you’re diabetic, you could see some stabilization of your blood glucose levels,
  2. If you’re hypertensive, your blood pressure could start to decrease,
  3. If your cholesterol is high, your blood lipid levels can start to improve,

4. And no matter what your health condition is presently, losing 10% of your body weight puts you at a decreased risk for developing heart disease. You can definitely get some positive vibes going and get some momentum for attaining your weight loss goals once you think about all of the wonderful things that will result in that 20 lbs. being gone from your life. And as a side benefit you’ll feel more comfortable with pictures being taken of you; you’ll notice when looking at them, too, that your posture has improved.

Watch Your Language!

Covered up to this point are some pretty important elements in reaching weight loss goals (and frankly, any other type of goal as well); ones that often get overlooked. Another important element as you set out to accomplish something brave and wonderful like losing weight is, believe it or not, your language. Practice “conscious languaging”, by getting rid of words like want, can’t, and need. Birth the new you by upholding and loving who you are in the present, which will foster the new future you more effortlessly. In your imagination, remember, you are already fit, you are already healthy and vibrant. So manifest that in your daily language, and your consciousness will go to work creating that as your reality.

This is not your typical recipe for weight loss, I realize. But those who are most successful at losing weight have practiced the above points, many times without even realizing it. And, for those who need it spelled out a little more clearly, you now have the “secret batteries” that were not included in your current weight loss program.
