How To Losing Weight without Dieting

Unfortunately many of us should lose weight, which is a polite way of saying we are overweight. Even more unfortunately, most of us won’t, at least according to statistics. And of those of us that do lose weight, 80% will regain that weight. There are seriously health implications to being overweight, including increased incidence of diabetes, high blood pressure, and more. Besides, you will definitely look better and feel better closer to your ideal weight.

It’s not really weight most of us need to lose, but fat. If you gain 10 pounds of muscle and lose 5 pounds of fat, you’ll be healthier yet weight more. The primary way people try to lose fat is through dieting, and although diets can and sometimes do work, they most often fail. Keep in mind that as we are discussing losing weight in this article, we mean fat, the type of weight you want to lose.

Many overweight people seem to be on a diet treadmill, constantly on and off different diets with limited if any success. There are many reasons why diets can fail, including unreasonable expectations, a regiment so severe that people can not stick to it, lack of a positive attitude, zero exercise, and more.

It is entirely possible to lose weight without going on a formal diet. You won’t lose 20 pounds in a month, which incidentally you won’t do with a diet anyways despite possible claims, but you might lose 20 pounds casually in a 6 months or a year. And you may have heard that the slower you lose weight, the better. There is less of a shock to the system, and it is less likely to come back. Let’s look at a few ways you can lose weight without dieting. I know these all work, because they’ve worked for me.

Number one, you need some activity in your life. Note I didn’t use the word exercise. Now you can “exercise” if you want, but if that is bad word to you, just use the word activity. Activity can be almost anything. One friend took up walking during lunch with colleagues, and he very slowly lost 50 pounds over the next few years. I’ve started fishing and biking, activities I loved as a kid but stopped doing. Fishing requires some walking, sometimes even strenuous hiking, into and out of beautiful areas. And biking is simply fun and certainly has gotten me into shape. Incidentally these are both activities I do with my kids.
Now if you are a total coach potato, you should feel good that medical research has shown that for the sedentary almost any activity has significant health benefits!

Number two of course has to do with food and eating. You should find some healthy foods you enjoy and simply eat more of them. For example I love fresh corn and fruit. I also like salads. I used to eat very few of these things because a burger and fries or take out Chinese was more convenient. Now I make a point of eating healthy foods that I enjoy, and there are some healthy foods everyone enjoys!
Notice I said nothing about eating less unhealthy food. By eating more healthy foods you’ll naturally eat less unhealthy food. It is that simple.

One third point, briefly. Alcohol has lots of calories. This is a tough one for me as I love wine. What I’ve done is cut way back, but when I drink, I drink better. I’ve cut back from a glass or two at dinner each night to wine maybe once or twice a week, and my waistline shows the difference.

You can lose weight slowly without dieting, and really, if you weight 20 to 30 pounds less who cares how long it took to lose it?
