Just One Ingredient Can Make a Big Difference

A few years ago, I discovered that I was about twenty pounds overweight. Being who I am, I researched everything there is about nutrition and fitness. Then I made the decision of eliminating one artificial ingredient from my diet: high fructose corn syrup. I didn't realize just how many foods included high fructose corn syrup, so it ended up being a bigger change than I originally thought. Within one month, without making any changes to my fitness, I lost five pounds! Eventually I achieved my ideal weight. And I all did was eliminate one ingredient.

This blog post is not a campaign against high fructose corn syrup. What I'm proposing is that we all have some kind of artificial or non-essential ingredient in some part of our lives that we can do without. Imagine how much more productive you could be if you stopped watching any kind of reality TV or sports for a year? Imagine what you could learn if you only read non-fiction books? What would happen if you held wine tasting parties to raise money for a charity instead of meeting for happy hour?

We have to admit to ourselves that time is finite. We have to admit to ourselves that some things in our lives are unnecessary guilty pleasures. Too many of us have over-packed our schedules with artificiality and frivolity. If you find that you don't have the time to spend time with the people who are most important to you, or if you find you can't seem to find the time to do what bring meaning to your life, it's time for you take an inventory of your schedule, and see what your temporal diet can live without. Just start with one artificial or non-essential activity, and see what happens.
