Alcohol and Weight Loss

I think most people know on some level that drinking alcohol when you are trying to lose weight isn’t such a good idea. But you can have an occasional drink some times. In fact there are many experts that note the health benefits of consuming a single drink per day.

One normal beer contains around 150 calories. So if you drink more then 1 of theses the calories will start to add up very quickly. And as you probably know, that is very bad for your weight loss.

Alcohol and Food

When you eat normal food and beverages, you body will start to gain energy from all the fats, calories, proteins and carbs that are in the food that you eat. It goes to the stomach and gets digested. And this is a slow procedure.

But alcohol is different. Alcohol does not need to be digested; it just goes right through your stomach, and can go to your liver and brain in just minutes. And as soon as the alcohol gets to the liver, your liver will focus all attention to processing the alcohol. And the carbohydrates and fats will just be changed into normal fat, because the liver will not have time to process it.

And after that this body fat will just be shipped out and stored as permanent fat in your body.

Alcohol and Water

When you drink alcohol it will dehydrate your body and it will make you lose water. And you will also lose some important minerals, magnesium, potassium, calcium and zinc.

Water is very important for your body, not only for weigh loss but for your overall health. Water helps your kidneys to function properly. And if they are dehydrated, the liver will have to pick up the kidneys slack, and therefore it can’t metabolize fat as it should.

So if you are drinking much alcohol you will ruin the day after your drinking also. Because the body will still be dehydrated. That is why you get a hang over by the way, because you don’t have enough water in your body.

Alcohol Lowers Your Inhibitions

When you drink alcohol you will start to lower your inhibitions. And you can start to make some stupid decisions. So what does this have to do with weight loss then? Well, most people when they are out drinking, or at home drinking, will probably start to feel hungry and want to eat something.

And as alcohol has lowered your inhibitions, you will probably don’t care if you eat something unhealthy. And you will probably over eat also. And this is very bad for your weight loss.

So as you can see alcohol can be devastating for your weight loss. But I’m not saying that you have to be sober the rest of your life. But during your weight loss, I don’t think that you should drink at all. When you have reached your goal weight, you can start to enjoy one or two drinks from time to time.
