Zerona – Too Good to Be True?

Some of you may have started to hear about a new Zerona low level laser (LLL) that is being promoted as the “first non-invasive body contouring procedure to effectively eliminate extra fat.” The laser is used externally to the skin. The equipment looks a little like a 4 armed octopus. The laser is used to the front for 20 minutes and then to the back for twenty minutes. They suggest 6 sessions over a 2 week time period. During the treatment the patient may have a feeling of warmth but there is no pain involved. It seems simple enough but almost too good to be true, Correct?

The issue now comes down to does it work for the patient? I have reviewed the research presented by the makers of Zerona. There have been no published content articles for the Zerona in peer evaluated quality medical journals. The only paper specific to the Zerona was an unpublished paper showing that the average patient lost a total of 3.5 inches when measuring 4 sites on the body. The paper was presented at the American Society of Lasers in Medicine and Surgery in 2008 but has not been published. In the paper they measured the waist, hips and each thigh. Now overall that doesn’t sound really bad but that comes out to almost $1000/inch for the patient as the corporation suggests charging between $2000 and $3000 for the six sessions.

The next question to ask is just how long will the results last? Well, they can not tell you that as their study only looked at patients up to 2 weeks after their 6th treatment. I have asked for long term research from the firm but they don’t have any. So, how many patients are not going to be happy with 3.5 inches that may only last for a couple of months? We must believe that the results are not long term.

So as you can observe I am a little suspicious about this technologies. For me personally, the jury is still out.

I did call again today to ask for more recent study showing long-term outcomes with the Zerona. The sales representative is going to send me copies of the research. I will inform you when I have had an opportunity to review their newest research.
