Healthy Weight and Height

There are healthy weight numbers for all body types. In general, a healthy weight is based on your height using the Body To Mass Index. The Body To Mass Index, or BMI, is a standard formula that returns a value based on your weight and height.

The BMI is a score that shows you what your target healthy weight is based solely on your height, sex and age. Generally speaking, the higher your BMI score, the more at risk you are for heart problems.

Determining Your Healthy Weight

Based on the BMI, the formula used is: BMI= (Weight in pounds X 703) / Height in inches

Based on this score you will find your ranking in this chart:

Below 18.5 : Underweight

18.5 - 24.9 : Normal

25 - 29.9 : Overweight

30 & Above : Obese

The Results

This is not strictly related to weight. A healthy weight is based on your height. Someone who is 6 feet tall would be expected to weigh more than someone who is 5 feet tall. Basing your weight solely on a number in your head can sometimes be an unhealthy goal. For example:

  • For a woman who is 5 foot 10 inches tall and of a medium frame, the ideal weight is between 142 - 156 pounds.

  • For a man who is 5 foot 10 inches tall and of a medium frame, the ideal weight is between 151 - 163 pounds.

A healthy weight is important to your overall health and quality of life. Eating healthy foods and exercise go a long way to staying healthy at a healthy weight.
