11 Ways to Burn 800 Calories in One Hour

Anyone can burn a few hundred calories in half an hour or so, but it takes a lot of hard work to burn a solid 800 calories per hour. Here are a few ways to reach that 800 goal in 60 minutes or less.

1. Step Aerobics

Anyone over 200 pounds will be able to burn 800 calories per hour doing this Jane Fonda-esque type of exercise. It targets your leg muscles--the largest muscle group in your body--and pushes your heart as well for the perfect muscle-building/cardio routine.

2. Boxing

Most people will need to step into the ring for real to burn upwards of 800 calories in an hour, but those over 200 pounds can burn off that many calories just by sparring with a partner for an hour.

3. Rowing

Rowing is an amazing workout, particularly when you put you back into it. Anyone over 150 pounds can burn over 800 calories with an hour of vigorous rowing on a rowing machine or in a real boat.

4. Carrying Heavy Loads

Want a no-nonsense way to burn off 800 calories in an hour? Grab a few sacks of cement, and get hauling! Those over 200 pounds can burn 800 calories provided their loads weigh more than 50 pounds.

5. Weightlifting

Strength training can be tiring, but don't let that stop you. Keep your heart rate above 125 beats per minute for the entire hour, and you can burn up to 1,000 calories in just 60 minutes.

6. Climbing Hills

No, we're not talking about just mild hiking, but we're talking hardcore military-style hiking. The average person can burn 800 calories in an hour by climbing hills carrying over 40 pounds of gear.

7. Cross Country Skiing

You'll burn just under 800 calories if you're cross country skiing at a moderate pace, but doing it at racing speed can help you burn upwards of 1,000 calories. If you're racing uphill, you can burn as many as 1,500 calories in a single hour.

8. Cycling

Pick up the pace and pump those legs! Racing on your bicycle can burn up to 1,500 calories per hour, depending on your weight and your speed. You'll have to push yourself to go above 20 MPH if you want to burn this many calories. Anyone over 180 pounds can burn more than 800 calories by cycling between 14 and 16 MPH.

9. Football

Playing a competitive game of regular football can help you to burn upwards of 800 calories per hour, though those under 180 pounds may have to work extra hard to do so. Just don't stop running, and you'll be good.

10. Forestry

Carrying heavy logs will help you to burn over 800 calories per hour, and you can burn up to 1,500 calories per hour by chopping wood at a fast pace (think wood-chopping races).

11. Ultimate Frisbee

If you don't stop running, you can burn just under 800 calories per hour playing ultimate Frisbee--provided you weigh over 200 pounds.

Some people get lucky and are born with fit, toned bodies. Andy Peloquin is not one of those people... Fitness has come hard for him, and he's had to work for it. His trials have led him to becoming a martial artist, an NFPT-certified fitness trainer, and a man passionate about exercise, diet and healthy living. He loves to exercise--he does so six days a week--and loves to share his passion for fitness and health with others.
