  • Get moving – If you want to lose weight in summer, be more active. It can be any activity, like moving, dancing, cleaning floors, or anything that helps you shed some weight. It is a much better idea than being sedentary for most of the day and thinking of dieting to reduce weight. You can easily include more physical activity in your life. Take to dancing, house cleaning, mow the lawn, and the like. Always look to include a spurt of activity if you can find the opportunity for it. If you can include 5-10 minutes of physical activity every hour, it would mean adding 40-80 minutes of calorie burning activity in a day.
  • Fruits and vegetables – Summer gives you a good opportunity to eat low calorie and nutrient-rich foods, particularly fruits and vegetables. Add more and more of fruits and vegetables in your diet. The best thing about most fruits and vegetables is that you can have as much as you like without bothering about adding to your calories. Some of the fruits that are easily digestible in summer are sathi rice, whole grain wheat, and low fat milk. Amongst the vegetables, pumpkin, gourd, ridge gourd (nenua), pointed gourd, bitter gourd, green cucumber, green coriander, flower of banana and amaranth (chaulayi) are considered useful for maintaining health in summer. Fruits to be included in your summer diet are watermelon, muskmelon, grape, mango, pineapple, apple, banana, pomegranate and coconut.
  • Avoid certain foods – You should avoid the foods that increase the level of heat in your body, or make the gastric juices excessively acidic. These include hot and spicy, bitter, dry, stale, salty, bitter and sharp to taste foods such as pickles, tamarind, various curries, tea, coffee, and the like.
  • Hydrotherapy – Have a glass or two of water first thing after waking up in the morning. Before moving out in the sun, have a glass of water always. Sticking to these two rules would go a long way in preventing sun strokes. Make sure you drink 3-4 litres of water daily to aid in weight loss.
