Dr. Oz, Weight Watchers show how to easily stay in shape

Would you lose weight and get healthy for $100? Or would it take more? Maybe $1,000? How about $1 million? That’s what Dr. Mehmet Oz is offering to one lucky viewer for his Transformation Nation contest, a contest he is partnering with Weight Watchers to conduct, he announced Sept. 26.

Dr. Oz said he knows people love food and in the U.S., obesity is becoming a bigger and bigger problem. He wants his viewers to get healthy. At 51, Oz is a prime example of what healthy should be. He’s in great shape and regularly demonstrates for his viewers that he leads by example, even going so far as to get a colonoscopy on camera.

Because he’s in a great shape, he says he knows you can get fit without having to work hard at it.

“In fact, the reason some people are thin and stay thin is they're not working hard at it, they've figured out a few simple ways of automating their lives. And that's the goal, if you want to be able to lose weight and keep it off. It's not rocket science. It's simple steps done right every day. And if you don't love doing it, it's not easy for you to do, you're not going to do it," said Dr. Oz.

Oz said he wants his viewers to look like a million bucks, and he wants one lucky viewer to have a million bucks.

"You know how you tell people, "You look like a million bucks!" We're going to give you a million bucks! Our goal is to reward you for doing the work that's required to look like a million bucks," said Dr. Oz. "So that people can figure out how to make themselves healthier. And at the end of the year, America's going vote on who gets to win the million dollars."

Oz said that many times we wouldn’t let our friends treat themselves the way we treat our own bodies.

"Ask yourself this question: If someone you loved dearly was eating the kinds of thing you're eating, and doing the things you're doing to your body, what would you tell them. Usually you would intervene. All I'm asking you to do is do it for yourself," he said.

There are seven steps to Dr. Oz’s program.

1. TELL A FRIEND: The show is asking all Americans to enlist their friends because we know you cannot go it alone. Studies show folks who lose weight in groups keep their weight off and are more successful in the long term.

2. CALCULATE YOUR BMI WITH WEIGHT WATCHERS: Learn the importance of your Body Mass Index. If you don't have a healthy BMI, we are asking you to lose 10% of your body weight or reach a healthy BMI, which correlates to a drop in risk to the things we fear most: cancer, diabetes, stroke, and heart disease. The first step in calculating your BMI is to go to a local Weight Watchers Center. There, you'll find out your starting weight. A leader will give you a complimentary weigh-in, and, you can stay for a meeting where you'll learn what getting started on (and sticking to) Weight Watchers is all about.

3. CONNECT WITH YOUR DOCTOR: Nearly 1/3 of all Americans don't see a doctor every year. We want you to start a relationship with your doctor so you can have an honest conversation with your weight before it's a bigger problem. Know the questions to ask your doctor and find out the right numbers to talk with them about, including blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose. Having a relationship will help you prevent future illness. If you don't have a doctor we want you to seek out your pharmacist who can help get the conversation going.

4. LEARN YOUR FAMILY'S HEALTH HISTORY: One of the critical tools a doctor uses to diagnose illness and recommend preventative care is your family history. Knowing your family's health history enables you to can get life saving screenings before it's too late. The Dr. Oz Show web site will be offering unique web tools powered by Sharecare to help you fill out your family history and compile all critical information.
