Should You Go Low Carb

?I'm on the Atkin's Diet?, ?I'm on the Caveman Diet?, whatever it is called it seems these days everyone is anti carbohydrate and telling everyone else they see to eat more meat. Your neighbor or co-worker just lost 15 pounds in three weeks just avoiding carbs and eating pretty much whatever else they wanted.

While the so called experts who are pushing the high protein-low carb craze on society claim that it results in great success for fat loss our society is becoming more obese every year. So if these diets which have been around in one form or another for over 30 years actually work why do people keep getting fatter?

At the core of the issue diets in general are doomed to fail for most people. It doesn't matter whether it is low carb or not.

The reason many people prefer low carb and high protein diets is due to the fact that it gives a satisfying feeling of fullness. This can be accomplished with a balanced diet just by including some protein in the diet. One need not go overboard to achieve these results. The reason many people feel less hungry on these low carb diets is due to ketosis where the body is burning fat for fuel. Extended ketosis can cause headaches and nausea and if carried too far can even cause you to go into a coma.

What many people do not realize on these high protein and low carb diets is that the majority of their initial weight loss is due to water loss which comes back as soon as you go off the diet.

If you yo-yo back and forth and keep gaining and losing the same weight over and over is it a successful weight loss plan? Another concern with restrictive diets like this is that they also give more potential for health issues such as heart disease and some types of cancer. A balanced diet of whole grain foods, fruits, and vegetables are quite the opposite and will help to guard against many health risks.

The key to maintaining a healthy weight is to adopt a healthy lifestyle that limits processed and refined foods, offers smaller portions, and can be easily followed without extraordinary effort or discipline. Eating in this way in conjunction with a healthy exercise program will help you maintain the healthy weight you desire for a lifetime.
