Herbal tea has been used in the Far East since ancient times for the treatment of a number of medical conditions. Most of these slimming tea are made from herbs and being sold as a natural weight loss supplement.

So popular are slimming tea used for weight loss that today in the market, there are so many different types. But they are all the same, they contain herbs which are natural laxatives. Such herbs include aloe vera, buckthorn, cascara, castor oil, rhubarb and senna. These herbs are used in ancients times to treat constipation.

So are these slimming teas effective in reducing the weight? Yes, drinking slimming tea do cause you to lose weight. However, they are not the right kind of weight you want to lose. As one of the effects of drinking slimming tea is frequent bowel movement, you will actually lose some weight from the toxins that you discharged. Along with toxins, you are also discharging a lot of fluid from your body. This may result in dehydration and if the lost fluid is not being replaced. And this may cause serious health problems.

As most slimming tea contain natural laxatives and research studies show that laxatives work only on the large intestines but not the small intestines where most of the calories are absorbed. Laxatives when taken in large quantities for a stretch of long periods, can affect the body's fat absorption.

To make it more effective, some slimming teas may contain more than one of the natural laxatives. Over dosage and prolonged use of laxatives can cause chronic constipation, dehydration, blood in the stool and permanent damage to the bowels. Thus, it is not advisable to take slimming tea over a long period of time. Most slimming tea have side effects such as diarrhea, lack of appetite and weakness.

There is a misconception that slimming tea contains only tea. In fact, most slimming tea only contain twenty five percent tea, the rest are the natural laxatives. You may lose weight from drinking slimming tea, but it is not a healthy weight loss. Whereas, tea itself is high in antioxidant and the polyphenols in tea helps to burn fat fast. The Chinese love to drink tea after a meal, as tea is believed to help "wash away" the oil in the food. Thus, taking tea regularly will help to control weight and it will probably be a better alternative as compared to slimming tea. Any kind of tea - green tea, black tea, oolong tea, they all are effective for weight control as long as they are not taken without any sugar or cream.

Just by drinking tea itself will not give you drastic reduction in weight, but it is good for controlling the weight. One should also practice eating healthy diet of more fruits and vegetables and proper exercise to keep the weight down, instead of resorting to drastic weight loss programs which may not be a permanent solution or even worse, cause permanent damage to health.
